Today is the International Snow Leopard Day

DUSHANBE, 23.10.2026 /NIAT “Khovar”/. In 2024, the United Nations General Assembly declared 23 October International Snow Leopard Day in order to strengthen international and regional cooperation in support of efforts to conserve the snow leopard. The designation reflects the species’ role in the global ecosystem.

The report says the snow leopard is a rare animal in Tajikistan and is listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Tajikistan. The total area of the snow leopard’s range in Tajikistan is 87,000 square kilometres, 70% of which is in Eastern Badakhshan.

According to the report, this is about 70% of Tajikistan’s territory and around 3% of the species’ current global range.
