National currency “somoni”: a reflection of Tajikistan’s history, culture, achievements and national identity

On the 26th anniversary of the somoni entering circulation, Khovar noted that Tajikistan’s banknotes are not only a means of payment, but also a reflection of the country’s history, culture, achievements and national identity.
On Monday, 30 October 2026, the state news agency Khovar reported that 26 years earlier, on 26 October 2000, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan signed the decree on introducing the national currency, the somoni, into circulation. The somoni banknotes were then put into circulation on 30 October 2000.
The report says the national currency has become one of the most recognisable symbols of independent Tajikistan over 26 years in circulation. According to Khovar, each banknote is not only a means of payment, but also a small page of the nation’s history that preserves the link between today’s generations and the rich heritage of their ancestors.
