On 16 September 2026, Khovar reported that, under a United Nations General Assembly resolution, 16 September has been observed since 2022 as International Interventional Cardiology Day. The day aims to raise public awareness of cardiovascular disease and minimally invasive treatment methods.
Khovar reports that cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide and include ischaemic heart disease, hypertension, stroke, arrhythmia, heart failure and congenital heart defects. The report says common symptoms include chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, irregular or rapid heartbeat, dizziness, weakness and swelling in the legs.
The article notes that diagnosis, prevention and treatment of these diseases have changed significantly in the modern era through interventional technologies. Interventional cardiology makes it possible to treat heart and vascular disease without open surgery and without a large incision, using a small puncture in a blood vessel in the arm or leg under X-ray guidance to insert catheters. Tajikistan’s First Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population, Salomuddin Yusufi, said 1,437 heart and vascular operations were performed in the first half of 2026.
