Dushanbe hosted the first-ever meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Standing Committee on social and cultural issues. The meeting was attended by the Secretary-General and Secretariat of the Assembly, as well as parliamentary leaders and delegations from more than 20 member states, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bhutan, Bahrain, Cambodia, Qatar, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Cyprus, Pakistan, Turkey, Oman, China, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Russia. Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Supreme Assembly of the Republic of Tajikistan Fayzali Idizoda said the session creates a favourable basis for strengthening interparliamentary cooperation, expanding constructive dialogue and bringing the peoples of the states closer together. He stressed that social and cultural issues — from the protection of historical heritage to education, healthcare, tourism, support for women, young people and older persons, as well as legal cooperation against trafficking in cultural property and narcotics — directly affect the daily lives of millions of people. Idizoda also said that the House of Representatives attaches serious importance to strengthening interparliamentary ties with Asian countries and regards the Asian Parliamentary Assembly as an effective platform for building greater trust, mutual understanding and solidarity across the continent.
