Under the 2024-2028 state programme, Tajikistan plans to improve the reclamation condition of 91,248 hectares of irrigated agricultural land. Khovar says an action plan for 2027-2028 has also been approved.
According to Khovar, the Programme for Improving the Reclamation Condition of Irrigated Agricultural Land in the Republic of Tajikistan for 2024-2028 was approved by a government decision on 2024-03-01. On 2026-10-29, the Government of Tajikistan approved the action plan for implementing the programme in 2027-2028.
The programme aims to prevent land from falling out of agricultural use, restore drainage systems and strengthen the country’s food security base. Experts say its implementation could raise crop yields by 20% to 40% and reduce dependence on imports.
In 2024, 10,107 hectares were improved, against a plan of 9,812 hectares. In 2025, 13,132 hectares were completed out of 15,632 planned. By 2026-10-01, a further 9,329 hectares had been improved, bringing the first-stage total to 32,568 hectares out of the planned 43,519 hectares.
