The President of Tajikistan congratulated the people of the country and Tajiks abroad on the arrival of the ancient Mehrgon festival and stressed its links with culture, agriculture and national identity.
Dear compatriots,
I sincerely congratulate all of you on the arrival of our ancient and valuable festival of Mehrgon. Mehrgon was formed on the basis of the laws of nature and the seasons, is linked to agriculture, including crop cultivation, and is celebrated in the golden autumn during the harvest period. Our ancestors marked it thousands of years ago as a rite of abundance and a peaceful way of life.
Throughout its long history, Mehrgon has stood in the life of our people as a symbol of awakening, respect for the labour of farmers, wise use of the gifts of nature, and gratitude for the blessings of autumn. In independent Tajikistan, it is celebrated every year as a precious heritage of our forebears and an important part of cultural self-awareness and the revival of historical traditions.
The message also notes that the ancient national festivals of Navruz, Tirgon, Mehrgon and Sada have helped present the Tajik people internationally as a cultured nation with an ancient civilisation and distinctive traditions. The President said Mehrgon should be more closely connected with modern life and turned into a factor for the development of culture, education, tourism, crafts and the national economy.
