Artificial intelligence: history, opportunity and responsibility

An analytical article on the historical development of artificial intelligence, its role in technological change, and the renewed question of whether machines can think.
Dushanbe, 2026-09-12 /NIAT “Khovar”/. The history of science and technology has repeatedly shown that every major discovery changes not only the way people work, but also how they relate to the world. The steam engine laid the foundations for the Industrial Revolution, electricity transformed production and everyday life, and computers and the internet took society into a new stage of digital development. Today, the logical continuation of this process can be seen in the rapid growth of artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence is not a sudden phenomenon or something created only in the past few years. Its emergence and development are the result of decades of scientific research in mathematics, logic, computability theory, linguistics, and the study of the nature of thought. The question that sounds even more pressing today amid unprecedented technological progress — “can a machine think?” — had already become one of the key scientific issues by the middle of the 20th century.
